New Student Number Hits Record High

In view of the rapid development of Macaoˇ¦s medical profession, societyˇ¦s urgent demand for nursing personnel, bright prospect of nursing career as well as the diversified channels of continuing education, more and more young people aspire to launching into the nursing profession in recent years. The number of new student applications of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) also increased in recent years, and this new academic year the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programme has admitted 82 new students which is the highest number on record. Currently, there are about 340 students studying at the College and about 200 taking part in short-term training courses.

The School Reopening Ceremony for 2013/2014 Academic Year was held at the Auditorium of Kiang Wu Hospital on 30 August 2013. Guests invited to the Ceremony included Vice-Chairman of Board of Directors of the College Vong Kok Seng and Ho Va Tim, Board Member Chan Kam Meng, Acting Director of Kiang Wu Hospital (KWH) Ung Pui Kun, Assistant to Director of KWH Fok Wai Lan, President of Alumni Association Leong Pou Heng and President of KWNC Van Iat Kio.

At the Ceremony, Vice-President of KWNC Xing Zhihong described nursing profession as a promising career of the 21st Century. She applauded studentsˇ¦ determination in choosing a profession that is full of hardships but at the same time deserves their whole-life dedication. Higher education is a great platform for students to grow and develop in terms of not only professional knowledge, but also self-initiative, critical thinking, innovation as well as the capabilities to develop and realise their potentials. To better fulfil the Collegeˇ¦s educational philosophy of ˇ§From Personhood to Benevolenceˇ¨ and provide students with a greater variety of activities and trainings, a new centre named ˇ§Benevolence Education Centreˇ¨ is established under the Education Department in the new academic year. The Centre is formed by a supportive team consisting of Student Affairs Officer, Student Affairs Coordinator, Class Instructors, Counsellors, Consultant of Studentsˇ¦ Union and Mentors of Sub-clubs of Studentsˇ¦ Union.

Following Vice-President Xing's speech, Acting Director of KWH Ng Pui Kun gave a brief introduction on the service of Kiang Wu Hospital. After that, the College presented scholarships to students and the Best Nursing Preceptor Awards to Nurse Lao Sio Wa, Leong Ieng Chio and Ng Hou Tek of KWH. Certificates of appointment were also presented to Nursing Preceptors, Consultant of Students' Union and Mentors of Sub-clubs of Students' Union. In addition to the Best Nursing Preceptor Award, this year the College newly established the ˇ§Best Clinical Instruction Provider Awardˇ¨ to encourage clinical placement providers to offer greater support for students' clinical studies, and the awardees were Accident & Emergency Department and 8S of KWH respectively.

As a gesture of welcome, after the Ceremony all students and teachers were invited to a tea gathering where they had a nice chat with each other in a relaxing and harmonious ambience, and where everybody had a chance to joyfully welcome the new academic year together.
