President Van’s Heart-to-Heart Dialogue with College Members |
|
Co-organized by the Debate Club and Choir, the Theme Talk “Footprint of Nursing” was held on 5 April 2013 at the Auditorium of Kiang Wu Hospital. The Talk serves to pass on the spirit of nursing and celebrate the 90th anniversary of founding of the College. At the Talk, President Van Iat Kio was invited to have a heart-to-heart dialogue with all College teachers and students. The activity commenced with the achievement review of the Debate Club and Choir and some excited warm-up games. Afterwards, President Van was invited to the stage to exchange ideas with the student representatives. Aside from dedicating to the nursing profession, President Van takes up various social roles, including the member of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, member of Comissao dos Assuntos das Mulheres, member of Comissao de Luta contra a Droga and Chairman of Board of Directors of Obra das Maes. President Van recalls the scene when she first entered the nursing profession. Dating back to the 1970s, owing to the uncertain economic situation, there were limited career options for women. At that time, she wished to choose a profession that was beneficial to both the society and her family, and thus, she chose to become a nurse. President Van also shares her experiences in overcoming frustrations and asks students to consider difficulties as opportunities to build up willpower. Encountering the everyday challenges and the unalterable environment, people must learn to adjust their mentality and be optimistic to overcome difficulties. As people grow older, their social and family roles change and the number of difficulties increases subsequently. President Van encourages students to seek assistance from family when resolving problems, and try to achieve a balance between their career and family life. In the end, President Van concludes her sharing by encouraging students to offer more care to people who are in need, apply the nursing knowledge to their daily life and try their best to broaden their horizon and social network. Following the dialogue, the Choir members brought three heartwarming songs to the audience. The entire Theme Talk concluded in the background of their pleasant singing.
