Society of Promoting Elderly Health Offers Health Check to the Public

The Society of Promoting Elderly Health of the Students’ Union recently held an activity of “Health Check for the Elderly 2012” at the recreation ground of Lok Yeong Garden on 11 November. This kicked off the series of activities of “Action of Love Giving” organized in celebration of the College’s 90th Anniversary.

Some health problems commonly suffered by the elderly such as diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis not only threaten the health of the elderly, but also affect their emotion. In view of this, the Society of Promoting Elderly Health would like to provide some simple health check to the elderly and through which they were offered information about their health condition. Moreover, by organizing this activity, the Society would like to deliver the knowledge of chronic diseases, introduce ways of maintaining good health, and convey the message of “prevention is better than cure” to the general public. During the activity, students assisted the elderly in measuring body mass index, bone density, blood sugar and blood pressure, and gave them health instructions.

Nurses often play an active and diversified role. This community care activity not only provides our students with an opportunity to perform the practising role to offer health check to the public, but also allows them to take on the educating and consultative role to answer the public’s enquires and deliver health messages to them.

The one-day health check activity concluded successfully and received positive feedback from the public. Special thanks must be given to the College teachers and students for their enthusiastic participation, and the Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao and the Glory Medicina Limitada for their sponsorship and warm support given to the activity.
