¡§Benevolence Lights Up My Later Life¡¨ 2nd Workshop for Dementia Family Care

¡§Benevolence Lights Up My Later Life¡¨ - An Education System Project in tackling problems related to an ageing society is organized by Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC), co-organized by Macao Federation of Trade Unions (FAOM), Macau Alzheimer's Disease Association (MADA) and General Union of Neighbours Association of Macau (UGAMM). The 2 nd training workshop for caregivers under this Project was held earlier at the Occupation Referral Services Section of FAOM. Dr. Leong Sok Man, Assistant Professor of KWNC and Vice-Chairman of Board of Directors of MADA, conducted the workshop on the topic of ¡§Care for the Dementia Patient's Family Life¡¨. The workshop aimed at raising caregivers' awareness of the latest caring trend and the suitable home setting for dementia patients. It also introduced the preventive measures for home accidents, and the advanced caring skills specifically designed to tackle the special problems of the patients. Dr. Zeng Wen, Associate Professor of KWNC and Chairman of Board of Directors of MADA, was also invited to the workshop as group instructor.

During the workshop, Dr. Leong introduced the initial symptoms of Alzheimer 's disease, played relevant video clips and illustrated the effective communication skills through demonstration to strengthen participants' memory. After that, participants were asked to sketch and express their own opinions about a home setting suitable for patients to live in. This sharing allowed participants to learn from each other in a more interactive way. Lastly, instructors and participants discussed a number of cases including medicine handling, patients' reluctance towards bathing, their wishful thinking and unstable emotion. Through these group discussions, participants gained more ideas on the different ways of taking care of the patients in their daily life. On that day, the workshop hosted more than 50 participants under a joyful atmosphere. All participants felt that they had benefited a lot from attending the workshop.

In addition to the workshop, ¡§Benevolence Lights up My Later Life¡¨ will hold a public lecture ¡§Effective Preventive Measures for Alzheimer's Disease: Guides on Daily Diet and Activities¡¨ at 2:30pm on 8 September 2012 (Saturday) at Chong Pak Chi Ka of FAOM. The lecture will be given by Ms. Lao Gar Bo, Lecturer of KWNC and Board Member of MADA. Interested parties are welcome to attend.
