MNS & PDAN School-opening Ceremony


The graduates from Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau have recorded a total of 251 in six sessions since its very first beginning in 2002. Thanks to the great support of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture and Health Bureau of Macao SAR Government, a joint PDAN Programme was successfully organized by KWNC under the cooperation between Kiang Wu Hospital Charitable Association and the Hospital Authority Hong Kong in 2008. This is the first postgraduate diploma programme ever run by the College. Specialty subject courses open up in the first session included Cardiac Care Nursing, Gerontological Nursing and Diabetes Nursing, of which, the first two courses have had their graduation ceremony held earlier on Sept. 25; and the last one will come to the end in October this year. The Programme has enhanced participants”¦ theoretical knowledge in mastery of specialty nursing and practical skills in operating advanced medical instruments and equipment. Part of the participants hope that they can learn from Hong Kong”¦s experience to develop specialty nursing all over the medical institutions in Macau in the near future. Meanwhile, with the approval and helps of National Ministry of Education, the Liaison Office and Macao SAR Government as well as the trust and support of Sun Yat-sen University, a Master of Nursing Science Programme has been jointly developed in Macau under collaboration between the College and SYSU, marking a new milepost of the College in education.

The School Opening Ceremony for MNS and PDAN Programmes 2010/2011 was held on Sept. 24 in the College Lecture Theatre. The attending guests included Deputy Director Zhang Xiaoguang and Deputy Division Chief Jiang Zhengyu of Culture and Education Department of Liaison Office of the Central People”¦s Government in the Macao SAR, Acting Director Chan Wai Sin of Health Bureau, Macao SAR Government, Dean You Liming of School of Nursing Sun Yat-Sen University, Deputy Director Xu Jinmei of Dean”¦s Office SYSU and Deputy Division Chief Wang Huaqiao of Graduate School Training Division SYSU, Chief Nurse Ho Suk Chen of Hospital Authority HK, Functional Chief Ng Weng Kei of Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR Government, KWHCA Secretary-General Ng Pui Kun, Vice-Chairman Ho Va Tim and Director member Wong Kok Seng of KWNC Board of Directors, Director Liu Ming of the School of Health Sciences IPM, Nursing Director Estela Ma of CHCSJ, Assistant to Director Fok Wai Lan of KWH as well as various community representatives, etc.

President Van Iat Kio presided over the Ceremony and expressed that the College has been keeping pace with the times to meet social medical development and dedicating to cultivation of quality nursing talents over the previous eighty-seven year since founding in 1923. This year, there will be four specialty subjects open up for PDAN Programme including Peri-operative Nursing, Hospice & Palliative Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing and Renal Nursing, with 22 students enrolled. Since the practitioners of these specialties are in urgent needs in Macau at present, the applicant number has recorded a remarkable growth comparing to the first session. A student who successfully completes the programme will be awarded postgraduate diploma in specialty by Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau and a specialist certificate by Hospital Authority Hong Kong. As for the joint MNS Programme in collaboration with SYSU, there are seventeen students who are current nurses respectively from the two hospitals and community institutions in Macau. Graduates of this three-year Programme will be awarded Master”¦s Degree in Nursing Science by SYSU. KWNC is responsible for teaching management while four members of its professor team have been appointed associate graduate instructors by SYSU to undertake partial teaching and research tutoring work. President Van indicates that the students are the seeds, promoters and practicers for nursing profession and specialties development of Macau. She encourages all of them to complete the whole study so as to push forward the professional progress and boost well-being of residents.

At the Ceremony, Dean You Liming and Deputy Division Chief Wang Huaqiao gave a briefing of SYSU status quo, showing that the collaboration on master”¦s degree programme has given full play to both parties”¦ teaching resources and faculty strength. The graduates will be a great force to support scientific researches. Dean You and Deputy Division Chief Wang respectively presented the Certificates of appointment of Associate Graduate Instructor to Prof. Michelle Zhu, Assoc. Prof. Andrew Luk, Assoc. Prof. Bill Zeng and Asst. Prof. Amanda Leong. After the speeches by two student representatives and a great group photo of students and faculty, the brief and solemn ceremony came to a successful end.
