In order to cope with the population increase and aging problem in Macau, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau held a discussion meeting at Plaza Restaurant on June 15th afternoon. Specialists in elderly affairs and representatives from elderly service organizations were invited to discuss over the significance of advocating policy and legislation on protecting aged people as well as the feasibility from the perspectives of nursing home caretakers and academic institution educators. Attended were the College Consultants, Principle Lao Sin Peng and Director Leong Iuk Va, Vice-Chairmen of Obra das Maes Council, Lei In Heng and Fong Cheng I, Nursing Home Director Lam Wai Wa, Residential Home Director Cheng Cheok Meng and Wellness Center Director Leong Fung Lan, etc.
KWNC President Florence Van proposed in the meeting that a standardized one-stop service integrating hospitals, residential areas and families should be provided for elderly care. Meanwhile our geriatric care objective has to change from the former “service-centered” to the present “patient-centered”. The professors of the College put forward three proposals against the elderly-related ordinance stipulation:
1. Cross-departmental collaboration in the government to integrate the current social and medical welfare.
2. Further exploration to the status quo and needs of the elderly by academic institutions.
3. Enhancement of young-and-old harmony while developing mutual assistance and good relations of neighborhood.
Representatives from Obra das Maes considered that whatever short-term, mid-term and long-term goals we should set up for legislation on elderly protection. The legislative bodies have to control systematically and effectively distribute the social resources involved, so that the true demands of the elderly could be satisfied. They advocated the following:
1.Legislation for elderly protection should be in the presence of law people.
2.In a lack of local nursing specialists in gerontology and chronic diseases, relevant professional training should be boosted.
3.
Perfect recreational services and facilities may be provided to meet future development of care for the Macau elders. In this aspect, we may refer to the policies on nursing home service for the aged people in neighboring areas such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

Principle Lao Sin Peng indicated that only when the legislation and enforcement, the popularization and implementation of the related laws are put into practice, could the elderly people be in real protection and have rights to ensure leading a respected and advancing later life. She encouraged the College to cultivate more nursing talents both excellent in character and competence, enhancing the quality of medical, living and ethical culture. The right manner towards the elderly can be effectively promoted through some parent-child activities or competitions.
Participants have deepened their awareness of nursing homes for the elderly through the meeting, especially the front-line workers who always face problems when taking care of the elderly. During discussion, series of issues and research topics were put forward in the hope of raising concerns in the society against the elderly protection policy and legislation.
Others KWNC representatives present at the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Andrew Luk, Assoc. Prof. Michelle Zhu, Asst. Prof. Bill Zeng and Lecturer Nancy Lei.
