School Reopening Ceremony of BSN Programme 2009/2010

The BSN Reopening Ceremony 2009/2010 of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau was held on 28th Aug. 2009, attended by over fifty new students respectively from the local twenty-two secondary schools and the mainland provinces (Guangdong and Sichuan). President Van Iat Kio in her opening speech said that the legislation enacting the new “Regime da carreira de enfermagem” symbolized a higher recognition for nursing profession in society of Macau, that nursing as a profession in demand of tertiary education was agreed by the general public, and this was a key signal for nurse students who could understand that nursing profession should bear social responsibilities while being respected by the society. President Van encouraged students to study well, get the best command of knowledge and practical skills. She referred to the fund-raising campaigns and visits that students participated in response to disaster-relief of Sichuan earthquake and the Taiwan storm, which effectively embodied the professional team spirit of care and benevolence of nursing, right interpreting the guiding philosophy “From Personhood to Benevolence” of the College.

On occasion of the two great celebrations of the 60th anniversary of our mother country and the 10th anniversary of Macao SAR’s establishment this year, as well as the soon coming Legislative Assembly election, the College had organized a series of activities such as visits and sharing meeting during June and July, Van said. These events were relevant to the theme of the semester “Show concern for our nation and Macau SAR while improving total quality of the College.” She expressed that the enhancement of self management ability of students was a key emphasis in work this academic year, thus the students were strongly advised to take part in social services more often so that they could cultivate self-independence competencies through the events to gain total professional development.

Dr. Zhang Xuming, the Honorary Professor of the College and Director of Kiang Wu Hospital presented a general profile of the service status of KWH including the newly inaugurated Dr. Henry Fok Building to the audience. Then came the awarding section, Scholarships sponsored by various parties were granted to candidates, awarded respectively by the guests of honor of the Ceremony; three nurses from Kiang Wu Hospital and one from the Fifth Subsidiary Sun Yat-sen University Hospital were awarded the Best Clinical Preceptor Award 2008/2009.
From Aug. 28th to 30th, an Orientation Camp specially designed for the new students took place at Centro de Formacao Juvenil Dom Bosco. The activity was aimed at helping all the new students understand their personal attributes and communication style, set up a close human relationship, learn how to get along with people and support with each other, share with the others the personal experience so as to get better understanding of the nursing profession.
